Charles Holden was born in Bolton in 1875. In Eitan Karol’s biography published in 2007 Holden’s early life in Bolton is described. He initially worked for David Frederick Green, “who tried unsuccessfully to get him articled to a local church architect. Holden always felt that this was because the architect was ‘unwilling to train an apprentice who might become or be helpful to a rival’ ”. A footnote suggests that this architect was Knill Freeman.
