Highfield, Birmingham

Built 1860s; altered by Frank Freeman c. 1930; demolished 1984

This house featured in the Architectural Review, May 1931, (p 179-180) and July 1931 (p. 31) with work by Frank Freeman and the artist Joan Souter Robinson. The article has photographs of the staircase and hall (copyright Architectural Press Archive / RIBA  Collections; used with permission).

The fascinating history of the house in the 1930s is described in wikipedia which states: “The influence of Highfield also extended well beyond Birmingham. Walter Allen described how "Most English left-wing intellectuals and American intellectuals visiting Britain must have passed through Highfield between 1930 and 1950”. How Frank Freeman became involved in this is a mystery.

The house was at 128 Selly Park Road.
